Material’s Safety during Home Renovation (7)

small house 3 Materials Safety during Home Renovation (7)Tests fall into two categories, according to the EPA. Long-term tests last anywhere from 91 days to a year. A long-term test will give you a reading that is more likely to tell you your home’s year-round average radon level than a short-term test. The quickest way to test is with short-term devices.

They are kept in place from two to 90 days, depending on the device. And, depending on the device, the test may require that all windows and doors stay shut. Though not as accurate as the long-term test, the short-term ones should be used to determine whether further testing is needed.

Radon levels in a home can be readily lowered for $500 to $2,500. In most cases, systems with pipes and fans are installed that don’t require major changes in the home. Most new homes already come with such systems. Such systems prevent radon gas from entering below the concrete floor and the foundation. Similar systems can be installed in homes with crawl spaces.

Both professional testers and remediation contractors must be certified by the EPA. If radon concerns you and your home shows evidence of high levels of the gas, it might be worth your while to have a radon remediation system installed if the walls are going to be opened anyway. Even if the problem doesn’t bother you now, it could be a problem when you sell your house down the road.
