Material’s Safety during Home Renovation

Materials Safety during Home RenovationOver the years, humans have come up with lots of what appeared to be good ideas that ended up being very bad ones. One of the most obvious was using lead as an additive in paint so that it would adhere to surfaces better. Another was using asbestos as insulation around heating pipes. Then there are the problems created by nature that we’ve only recently discovered. I’m talking about radon.

We will tackle two other problems of modem homeownership toxic mold and indoor air quality-in Chapters 30 and 31. Right now, I want to address the Big Three. I suggest that, well before you begin any renovation project, you tackle lead paint, asbestos, and radon first.

Let’s stop a minute. Real estate agents tell me that homebuyers in a booming sellers market seem less concerned about these three issues and are more than willing to forgo all but the notifications of rights to inspect required by federal or state law. Even when radon is a concern, a buyer will negotiate with the seller for a certain sum to remedy the problem after settlement, then hold on to the money and never get the work done.
